How to create and use the password reset disk ( Windows 11/10 )

If you use a local account on your computer, it is good to create a password reset disk and save it on a USB drive or any other disk. Password reset disk is an easy way to reset the forgotten user account password in Windows operating system if you lost or forgot the password.

However, you can reset the password before login in by answering the security questions if you still remember the answers. Moreover, you can reset the windows login password using the command prompt if you have not created a reset disk or can’t remember the security questions. To create the password reset disk in Windows 11 or 10, follow the following steps one by one:

  1. Sign in to your computer with a local account, open the Control Panel from the Start Menu, or press Windows + R button and write Control Panel, and enter.
  2. Click on User Accounts > User Accounts.

  1. Forgotten password Wizard pops up; first, insert your USB flash, then click next.

  1. If you have inserted the USB flash, it automatically selects the USB drive. You can change the drive by selecting the drop-down menu. Click next.

  1. It wants you to wait while the Wizard creates the disk. When the progress is 100% complete, click the next button.

  1. Close the Wizard, and click Finish.

If you go and check the USB flash, a new file, userkey.PSW has been created. Keep that file secure because anyone who has access to that file can reset your user account password.

Reset Windows 11 or 10 password with password reset disk

Now you have a password reset disk file on your USB flash. If you lose or forget the local user account password, you can use this disk to reset the old password and set a new password following the below steps.

  1. In the sign-in window, after you enter the wrong password, you will see a notification saying, ‘The password is incorrect. Try again’. Click OK.
  2. Click on the Reset Password.

  1. A new window with three questions shows up. If you have answered those questions while creating the account, now you can answer those questions with the same answers and reset the password. Else, scroll down, and click on the Use a password reset disk instead.

  1. The Password Reset Wizard welcomes you. Insert the USB flash that contains the reset disk file, and click Next.

  1. If you have inserted the USB drive, it automatically detects the drive. Click next.

  1. Now choose the new password for the user account, confirm the new password, type the password hint and click next.

  1. You are on the final Wizard; you have successfully reset the password. To close the Wizard, click Finish.

Finally, return to the sign-in page and enter the new password.
